    Students are learning about mental illnessWe will be starting a program called Project ALERT in healthyour son/daughter’s class.
    We have talked about several illness using Walkinourshoes.org. In addition, we are starting our mental illness projects
    Project ALERT is an age-appropriate substance abuse prevention curriculum proven effective in reducing experimentation among teens, and in reducing usage among teens who experiment.
    Project ALERT contains eleven lessons in its initial year
    that will allow students
    to research illnesses
    focus on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and inhalants - those substances that they are interested in,the first and present itmost widely used by young people today. Project ALERT’s focus is on motivating non-use, learning to recognize pressures to use, and on developing and practicing skills to resist these pressures.
    Our school district is committed to providing
    the class.most effective approaches to preventing the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in our schools and communities. We know that prevention of drug use and abuse is most effective when it is a partnership between the community, the home and at school. At the start of the program, you will receive a letter introducing Project Alert, and explaining more about it.

    We have been talking about Stress recently,will be starting a program called Project ALERT in your son/daughter’s class.     Our Identity Boxes are complete and our presentationsWe have been given! The room has new colortalking about Stress recently, and lots of interesting boxeshow it we are effected by it. We have learned ways to look atcope and discover new things aboutmanage stress, and the implications of too much stress in our classmates!lives.
    We are now talking with the AWARE officers; Officer Pilothaving our first test this year, on stress, and Officer McCabe, about Cyber Safety and Cyber Bullying. Students google their own names and talk about what can happen if we aren't safe on the internet.

    then begin working on our Mental Health unit where we will discuss the benefits ofbe doing a good support system, self-concept and self-esteem, stress, anxiety and sleep. We will also discuss the difference between sadness and depression and areas of support.great project.

    I have been teaching health for 10 years now and love it! It's a great way to be in the classroom after so many years in the gym.
    Additionally, I have the opportunity to know most of you since you were in kindergarten- it's so fun being able to teach you in both PE and Health!

    My favorite part of the Summer was traveling to Nantucket and the Cape, and going to Surf School in Kennebunkport Maine!
