Students are learning about mental illness in health class.
We have talked about several illness using Walkinourshoes.org. In addition, we are starting our mental illness projects that will allow students
to research illnesses that they are interested in, and present it to the class.
We have been talking about Stress recently, and how it we are effected by it. We have learned ways to cope and manage stress, and the implications of too much stress in our lives.
We are having our first test this year, on stress, and then will be doing a great project.
This year will begin with a project called "The Wellness Mobile".
This is a fun way to express the aspects of health (that we will learn) that pertain to your life. Students will be creating
these mobiles using pictures and objects and hanging them along with the Wellness topics. They will present the mobiles to the class
explaining why these aspects of Wellness are important to them. Mobiles will be made, and hung throughout the classroom.
Our Identity Boxes are complete and our presentations have been given! The room has new color and lots of interesting boxes to look at and discover new things about our classmates!
We are now talking with the AWARE officers; Officer Pilot and Officer McCabe, about Cyber Safety and Cyber Bullying. Students google their own names and talk about what can happen if we aren't safe on the internet.
We will then begin working on our Mental Health unit where we will discuss the benefits of a good support system, self-concept and self-esteem, stress, anxiety and sleep. We will also discuss the difference between sadness and depression and areas of support.
Students in the 7th grade will begin the year with a project called, "The Identity Box".
This project allows students to describe themselves, families, hobbies, beliefs and values. They will do so
by using various object and pictures of their choice, and placing them inside the box. They will then present their identity box
to the class.
This is a great project to allow students to get to know other aspects of their classmates they might not necessarily know. Students are encouraged to
ask questions after each presentation if they would like to know more.
